Norway's City of Art Nouveau
Alesund is known as Norway's City of Art Nouveau. While it isn't the only location of art nouveau in the country nowhere else can such a large stylistic ensemble be seen. This concentration arises because the city was quickly rebuilt after the devastating fire of 1904, which destroyed much of the centre. Considerable support was forthcoming, allowing the city to be rebuilt in a very short space of time just when new ideas about architecture arrived with Norwegian architects who had studiued abroad. The rebuilding of Alesund was thus a unique opportunity to develop domestic stone and brick architecture in the new style.
